I visited Alcatraz for the first time in 2008 and found it fascinating. The island is so rich with history and indescribably eerie. If you ever have the opportunity check out the night tour.
Constructed in 1853 and first lit in 1854, the lighthouse at Alcatraz was the West Coast’s first. Fifty-two years later, it was damaged in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. In 1909, the present 84 ft structure was erected and later the original lighthouse was torn down.
The sole water tower on Alcatraz was put in place in 1939 and can store 250,000 gallons.
